PASCALE STEVEN
Pascale Steven was born in London and studied fine art at North East London Polytechnic. Since 1991 Pascale Steven has lived in Ireland and works in Derry. Exhibitions include Tracer at Project Arts Centre, Dublin, Endless Revolution at Context Gallery, Derry, and Erasure at The Old Museum, Belfast.
Her work reflects an ongoing interest with ideas revolving around identity and perception, the fickle nature of selective memory and subjective truth. Much of Steven’s work has explored our response to ‘positive behavioral statements’ and examines an interior world that is often in conflict with the neat exterior we present. The work incorporates text, sculpture and found objects as a method of creating an intimate interior landscape where dreams, reality and outside forces converge. In stark contrast minimal or regimented uses of materials are exploited as a means of expressing a ‘controlled, objective’ exterior, an exterior where positive statements reign.
She recently collaborated with Conor McFeely on a site- specific video/text public artwork called Pause/Timeslip projected onto the city walls in Guildhall Square, Derry. Most recently she has exhibited at Platform Arts Belfast, the Burren Co. Claire and at the Void Derry in 2013.
